We’re excited to welcome new faces to our counseling team this year! Ms. Izzy Steiger joins us as a School Counselor, bringing a strong background in student support. Izzy also has experience working in South End schools and is passionate about building relationships with students and families. We’re also thrilled to introduce our counseling intern, Ms. Linda Wang, who will be with us on Tues, Wed, and Thurs. You can reach her at liwang@seattleschools.org. In addition, we want to recognize our incredible school registrar, Ms. Kelly Tagupa, Room 2151, who supports students with transcripts, records, and enrollment needs—she’s an essential part of our student services team. Completing the application may help provide many benefits, including fee waivers for college applications, fee waiver for tests, and access to scholarship opportunities. This also helps ensure Cleveland receives the resources we need to best serve students. It takes 10 minutes to apply and you only need to complete the form once for all of your school aged students.

504 Accommodations Process

Seattle Public Schools and 504 law set the process for identifying students who may need 504 accommodations and determining their eligibility. Students may qualify for a 504 plan if they have a disability (ex. Dyslexia, ADHD, Anxiety, etc.) and it has a significant adverse impact on the student’s academics when compared to their peers.

Once a student has been referred for a 504, the following timeline begins

  1. Observation Period
    • 25 school days
    • If student qualifies for an evaluation, parents/guardians are notified and sent a Consent to Evaluate form.
  2. Evaluation Period
    • 30 school days
    • Student Intervention Team reviews the data to determine student’s eligibility for a 504 plan
    • If student qualifies for a 504, parents/guardians are notified and sent the plan for signature

*The plan can take up to 30 calendar days to build and send to families.

Do you think your student may need a 504?

Please fill out the 504-2 Child Find survey to identify what disability your child may have that requires 504 supports.

To help streamline the observation and/or evaluation process, feel free to send supportive documentation to Cleveland’s 504 Building Coordinator, Kayla Barr, at klbarrgraham@seattleschools

What is considering during the observation and/or evaluation process for a 504 plan?

  • Observation
    • Student perspective
    • Parent/Guardian perspective
    • Teacher short-form feedback
    • Current student grades
    • Current student attendance
  • Evaluation
    • Historical grades
    • Historical attendance data
    • Historical assessment data
    • Skills Inventory in-depth feedback from teachers
    • In-depth student conversation
    • Parents/Guardians may be asked for more details
    • Documentation from outside professionals if provided (e.g. medical, psychological, etc.)

*In addition to the information gathered during the observation phase

What if my student qualifies for a 504 plan?

The plan will be written and shared for signing, and then sent to teachers. The Building 504 Coordinator seeks to follow up with the student within a few months to see how the process has gone. The student is responsible for advocating for themselves using their 504 plan.

What if my student does NOT qualify for a 504 plan?

While it is normal for families to worry about their student based on a disability status and anticipated impact, if a student is doing well overall, they may not qualify for a plan. A student does not need to have all As and Bs to be considered ineligible for a 504 plan, when compared with their peers. If a student does not qualify for a 504 plan, parents/guardians will be sent notice of this decision. Families may appeal (see SPS 504 website below for more details). Students also may not qualify, but can be referred again within the year if circumstances change.

For more information regarding 504 plans and the process in Seattle Public Schools, please visit the district 504 Accommodations.
