Hi, I have been teaching Mandarin Chinese at Cleveland since 2010. I grew up in Taiwan, moved to Ohio, then moved to Seattle in 2008. I graduated from Ohio State University with a PhD in education. I enjoy teaching and have always dreamt of becoming a teacher. I like spending my free time taking care of my plants, playing with my cats: Greggy and Charlie, and hanging out with my family. I look forward to the upcoming year teaching my wonderful students.

Humanities 12

,Personal Message

My name is Sonya Urs (she/her pronouns) and I teach 12th grade Humanities (Language Arts, Government, and Ethnic Studies). I will also be welcoming a 9th grade advisory this year. This is my sixth year teaching 12th grade and I absolutely love it. I think its a gift to be able to work with young people who are in their final year of high school. I'm also a member of Cleveland's Racial Equity Team, the Teacher Leader Cadre, and a Coach with SEA's Center for Racial Equity. One of my passions that I bring to teaching is the importance of learning who we are, where we come from, and understanding our shared histories so we can learn from one another and grow together.

Distance Learning is new for all of us. I will try my best this year to meet our student and family needs. Being able to connect with one another through phone calls, texts, or emails will be very important for all of us. Please feel free to reach out to me, whenever you may need. Let's get through this together.

Here's my schedule for the 2020-21 school year:

1st/2nd Period: Humanities 12

3rd/4th Period: PREP

5th/6th Period: Humanities 12

7th/8th Period: Humanities 12

I have been teaching 10th grade Humanities at Cleveland for 8 years plus my student teaching. I also have really enjoyed coaching the fastpitch softball team. I feel really lucky to be a part of the Cleveland team. I'm sure I have learned more than I have taught during my time here. I enjoy biking to work, backpacking, reading, and hanging out with my little family.
