Weekly Family Newsletter

April 26, 2024

Hello Cleveland families!

This week, our community dealt with a stressful and difficult safety incident, which resulted in SPD confiscating a gun at school. As I reflect on this incident, I am grateful for the community member who provided the anonymous tip that prompted our team to respond. The individual who brought this concern to our attention helped make Cleveland a safer place, and I am thankful they reached out.

Please encourage your student to talk to a trusted adult if they see or hear anything concerning. We take these reports seriously and go a long way in ensuring the safety of our school.

We hope you have a restful and restorative weekend.

There are three SLC format options: a recorded presentation from your student to you, a virtual online meeting, and an in-person conference. Please reach out to your student’s advisory teacher with any questions you might have about our process!

3rd Quarter Progress Reports

On May 4th, 3rd quarter grades will be available on the Source.

Thanks for coming out to Cultural Night hosted by Filipino Club!

This week, so many of you came out to support our latest Cultural Night event. Thank you for helping make our Cultural Night hosted by Filipino Club a massive success. Our students and club advisors did an outstanding job of putting on a great event with lots of food, student performances, and opportunities for advocacy and community engagement. As we take time each month for our students to celebrate their cultural identities and heritage, we thank you, Cleveland families, for honoring their efforts.

Family Night for East African Families May 15

Family Night hosted in partnership with Building Cultural Gaps (BCG) on May 15 for our East African students and families at 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. in the Cleveland cafeteria. There will be dinner, speakers, and prizes. Look at the many reasons why to attend!

  • Bring in family voice with student voice, especially our Black/EA families who are not directly involved in our school-based decision making. Foster the “power” of EA families to build community for students who are prospering in school and students who are struggling in school; thus improving motivation, academics, and a sense of belonging at our school.
  • With family support get our students out the hallways and into classrooms.
  • Create a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment for all.

Have questions? Connect with Hirsi, Maryam, Yusuf, Millena, Hewan, and Bathsheba (as well as others who we will be recruiting soon) about spreading the word.

Cultural Night Pacific Islanders Club May 17

Our Family Co-Design Work

We have invested part of our Mental Health grant money into family and youth co-design work, and I’m thrilled to share with you that Mx. Jimenez and Ms. Keegan serve as our Family Co-Design leads. This work is done in collaboration with like-minded schools and supported by a facilitator from the Family Leadership Design Collaborative. New Mental Health Support!

She will be providing direct services to students at Cleveland for 30 hours per week and serve a caseload of 30 students. We can’t wait to tell you more about her in the near future! If you believe your scholar would benefit from some kind of mental health support, please have them visit their school counselor in the counseling office.
