    Mathematics pathway flowchartDear Families/Guardians/Caregivers:

As a STEM school, we offer a variety of pathways for students to satisfy the graduation requirement of four years of math. On the back of this letter, you will find a flowchart of math courses offered at Cleveland High School.

From the flowchart, a 9th grader taking Algebra will not have the opportunity to take AP Calculus their 12th grade year. To accelerate through the flowchart, the math department has come up with the following pathways:

Pathway 1: Sign up for a lottery to take Geometry and Algebra 2 concurrently in the 2019-2020 school year. Since there are a limited number of seats in those classes, we cannot guarantee all students will be able to double-up on their math.

Pathway 2: Enroll in Apex Learning, or another accredited online learning platform recognized by Seattle Public Schools, to earn Geometry credit prior to the 2019-2020 school year. Costs for enrollment and/or materials must be paid for by families.

Pathway 3: Test out of Geometry in April 2019 by scoring at least 80% on the Geometry Final. This choice will require rigorous self-guided study by the student utilizing a Cleveland Geometry Study Guide, Khan Academy, C.A.S.H., and any other tutoring options.

It is our belief that classroom instruction and interaction with peers is the best learning environment for all students. Pathway 1 gives your student the opportunity to maximize their learning. However, given that we cannot guarantee a seat in both Geometry and Algebra 2, we wanted to provide other options for consideration.

If you have any questions, please contact Nicola Wethall, head of the Math Department.

    Sincerely,
    Cleveland Math Department
