Student-Led ConferencesDear Eagle Parents and Families:
Can you believe we are almost through the first grade-marking period of school? The quarter ends November 9. Please look through this newsletter for details about Student-Led Conferences, changes in athletics and other important topics.

There will be no school for students on Tuesday, Nov. 21, to make space for conferencing. Parents can sign up to conduct their student's SLC from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Other time slots will be available on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Monday, Nov. 20, from 4 to 8 p.m., or individually scheduled with advisor at other times. Home visits are also available.

WHY: This is a chance for students to reflect on their learning and present to their family members about their progress. It is also a chance for family members, advisors, and teachers to work in partnership.

WHAT: Advisors schedule a 20-minute appointment with each family in their advisory. The student should be the leading voice in this conference. If parents wish to follow up with other teachers, the advisor will provide them with a CHS Staff Directory and will help parents communicate with teachers. Successful completion of a Student-Led Conference is usually a major part of a student's advisory grade.

WHEN: In November, at the mutual convenience of the student's advisor and family, with special time given during Thanksgiving week to accomplish this.

    Saturday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    Monday, Nov. 20 from 4 to 8 p.m.
    Tuesday, Nov. 21 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (This a teacher workday & no students/classes)
During the above times, ECHO support will be provided in Room 1162.

If families cannot attend at any of these times, please work with your student's advisor to find a mutually agreeable meeting day and time. Questions? Contact your student's advisor/mentorship teacher.

Deadline for SLC completion: Dec. 1, 2017.

The Counselors had a successful October and are focused on getting seniors to apply for FAFSA or WASFA, which opened October 1. We were in senior Humanities classes and most recently held a Senior College Application/Financial Aid Night.

In the next few months, counselors are collaborating with our Activities Coordinator, Bryan Gordon to host post-secondary resource days on Wednesday during junior/senior Advisory.
        Here are the dates:
Nov. 6 - PLU University (will be visiting in room 1342)
Nov. 8 - Get the most from your college visit
        Nov. 15 - Finding scholarships
Nov. 29 - Dorm vs offsite living
        Dec. 6 - UW Tacoma
Dec. 15 - Understanding Meal Plans

    Upcoming Counseling Events
Thursday, Dec. 7 - Senior Night in 1201 6-8 p.m. (By invitation only from counselors)

Please take note of these policy changes:

Students will need to be signed out to be picked up by a parent/legal guardian while at away contests where the school provided transportation to the contest. If students are not signed out, then they must ride the bus home with the team.

Any unexcused absence will result in becoming ineligible for practice or competition for the day that the absence occurred.

All student athletes and their parent/guardian must read and sign the new Cleveland Athletic Handbook (to be posted on our website soon) before they are considered eligible to practice.

We will be hosting a formal banquet/award show for all Cleveland athletics at the end of the year rather than hosting individual team banquets at the end of each season. Teams may host their own banquets at the end of the season if they wish.
